08:55 pm - Inkscape just got a lot cooler...
.47 has a ton of great new filters that work really well!

Here's a guide:

I use Inkscape almost every day and these are super helpful.

01:46 pm - Help!
I've been installing and uninstalling lots of stuff lately so I thought I would clean up my system a bit to get rid of all the accumulated crap. I was looking at the recommendations in this thread at Ubuntu forums and one of them says that /tmp can be cleared out regularly so I did that and now I'm having all kinds of problems.

When I try to open up Synaptic, it says my password is incorrect.

When I open up Epiphany, I get an error message saying: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Server ping error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0)

I don't know if there are other issues, those are the ones I've found so far but I seriously hope not.

HELP! How do I fix this? In simple terms please, I don't want to fuck this up any more than I already have!

ETA: FIXED :)

05:48 pm - How much storage does Ubuntu take vs. Kubuntu?
I don't know about you guys, but every time a new version of Ubuntu comes out, I think about changing over to KDE and giving it a try.

Thing is, I've been using basic Ubuntu since I started and every time I've tried to switch, it's been a bit scary. I know there is a way to have both installed on my computer at once and play with the two, but I am not sure how much storage space they both have.

With everything I've installed since my last clean install (about six months ago), I have 2.3 gigs left free on my / partition. This is a 10-gig partition. Would this be enough to comfortably run both Kubuntu and Ubuntu?

I can't seem to find literature anywhere about how much space each will take, nor do I know just how much software will transfer over. Does anybody have any idea? I'd really like to give KDE a shot, but don't want to make the full switch over yet.

[Note: What I'm talking about is keeping Gnome and KDE running with the same Ubuntu installation. Not two separate installs, just different environments. They'll share the same software et al. Sorry for the confusion]

Hi!
I wasnt too sure where to go! I am a bit stuck. I am trying to write a little
I am just trying to use a php script to save information from an html form to a text file. I am using my universities provided server for my three little files. My form html page, the writetofile.php it calls, and the data.txt file where id want my data to be saved. It seems no matter what i do, no matter how many examples i look at, i cant seem to get it to write to my txt file.

Code under the cut! )

10:12 am - Trying to get the hang of PDO
Hi Guys!

Lisa's back with her super dumb question time!

I'm trying to get the hang of PDO, and I understand that it'll be easier for my DB Connections in the future, but there are just some (probably basic) things that I'm getting stuck on.

Let's say I have this in my class Click for code snippit )

The goal is to 1) pull the customer's login information for $network out of our database and display it for them on the page (we really try and dumb things down for them), and 2) set $username, $password, and $profile_url, which are data members for my class, with their initial values.

Would the values bound $username, $password, and $profile_url persist after the while loop has ended? Or because of the use of bindColumn, would the values be trashed? Or do I even need the while loop at all? Some of the things I'm reading seem to conflict as to whether or not I need it.

Thanks again!

01:09 pm - ssh behaving strangely
So here's a really weird issue I'm having with a fresh install of Karmic Koala. I've never seen this before.

I have the new machine set up nicely and I have a static ip assigned.
I cannot, for the life of me, ssh into this machine when it boots. no ssh, no ping, nothing. like it's not there. if I reset the ip address, hit the net, etc I get nothing.

BUT, if I ssh from that machine into my box, then I can ssh into it.

It's almost as if I have to prove to the Karmic machine that I'm a real boy before it will play with me.

Anyone have any idea what that might be? i thought iptables, but it's blank. I have no firewall running (on the machine) and the only thing between me and it is a router.

04:18 pm - bzip/hashsum mismatch problems
Anyone else having these?  Downloading via Synaptic or from the terminal?  It's not my internet connection, I've just tried it in work.

I've got a box running Hardy Heron I've been using as a file server. It's been acting a little flaky lately, and today for some peculiar reason when it reboots the machine seems to just die. I can log in remotely, the shares still work, I just can't access the box locally.

When it does boot, just before the orange line gets to the end (on the splash screen) there's a peculiar system beep (i.e. not through the audio port), then nothing.

I've tried restarting in recovery mode, and there don't appear to be any obvious problems... until you get to the login screen, and the video gets wonky and it appears to hang.

I've tried booting from the live CD, but the options on what to repair aren't obvious... I strongly suspect a boot drive is failing, but what do I know?

I'd like to keep all the configurations as I've got a rather large OS RAID I'd hate to reconfigure, as well as the server settings. Is there an easy way to back up the relevant boot drive settings remotely, replace the boot drive, and install a more recent version of ubuntu (while still retaining the settings)?

12:43 pm - Is upgrading advisable this early?
This list has been pretty quiet despite the release of a new version of Ubuntu.

In previous releases, the suggestion I've always heard is to hold off on upgrading for a few weeks until the bugs have been worked out. Does the same hold true for Karmic Koala? I've read a lot of good things about the release, but don't want to go upgrading until I'm pretty sure it'll work on a basic level.

Experiences thus far? Many glitches with common things? (sound/file transfer/software upgrades) Or is it pretty stable this early?
